Film editing is part of the creative post-production process of filmmaking. It involves the selection and combining of shots into sequences, and ultimately creating a finished motion picture. It is an art of storytelling. Film editing is the only art that is unique to cinema, separating film-making from other art forms that preceded it (such as photography, theater, dance, writing, and directing), although there are close parallels to the editing process in other art forms like poetry or novel writing. Film editing is often referred to as the "invisible art"because when it is well-practiced, the viewer can become so engaged that he or she is not even aware of the editor's work.

 

On its most fundamental level, film editing is the art, technique, and practice of assembling shots into a coherent whole. A film editor is a person who practices film editing by assembling the footage. However, the job of an editor isn’t simply to mechanically put pieces of a film together, cut off film slates, or edit dialogue scenes. A film editor must creatively work with the layers of images, story, dialogue, music, pacing, as well as the actors' performances to effectively "re-imagine" and even rewrite the film to craft a cohesive whole. Editors usually play a dynamic role in the making of a film.

 

MdFa has its own Equipment , Edit Set up and Sound Studio.

Editing students Practice with Adobe Premere,Evid Express and Final Cut Pro (FCP)

Each student Edit Several short films during his / her course,and finally gets a chance to make his /her full length Diploma Film.

Duration of the courses

AT MdFa Film and Video Editing course is divided into three catagories

 

Full Time Course which is for One Year,

 

Short Term Course Six months.

 

Quick Time Course Three months

 

Film and Video Editing students have classes 5days a weak, 3days Practical Exercise and 2 days Theory lessons.

Seminar of the Day at MDFA :

Edwin S. Porter is a man who I consider to be the father of film editing.  In 1903, he exhibited his unprecedented ability to construct a film and tell a story from multiple shots, rather than just one where the whole story takes place in front of a stationary camera.  He was the first to use editing as means of progressing the film's story! The editing is what really tells the story, not the actors. Porter also has defined many film transitions, which play a large role in film editing theory.

 

Porter also was the first to use found footage and transform it into a story that he wanted to tell that was unrelated to what the footage was originally intended to portray. This shows that he really saw editing as an art form, capable of independently telling stories.
